Centre for Strategic and Defence Studies

Royal Directives were issued in 2001 to establish a Centre for Defence Studies with the aim of developing intellectual and critical acumen among participants by promoting the acquisition of knowledge and skills needed to conduct research. It was initially intended as a specialized centre, dedicated exclusively to advancing defence and military studies, with particular attention afforded to enhancing the ability of participants to identify the early warning signs of future challenges and anticipate their possible implications. One of the primary objectives of the centre has been to encourage and support scientific research, undertaken in the Ministry of Defence and the Sultan’s Armed Forces, by equipping researchers with the necessary knowledge and skills to undertake research projects in keeping with best practice. In 2022, Royal Decree No. 27/2022 established the Academy of Strategic and Defence Studies, thereby incorporating the Centre for Strategic and Defence Studies and the Joint Command and Staff College within the newly formed Academy

Message by the Head of the Centre for Strategic and Defence Studies

Research Studies have become the backbone of scientific and technological progress and the catalyst for development. They have attracted the attention of countries worldwide, and are offered by numerous academic institutions due to their perceived importance in improving capabilities in various fields, and positively impacting the way administrations govern. The centre has continued to benefit from ongoing support extended by His Majesty, the Supreme Commander - may Allah protect him – confirming His Majesty’s appreciation of the positive impact that well-researched projects can have in the military field.
