Joint Command and Staff College

The Joint Command and Staff College was established in response to directives from His Late Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Oman – may Allah rest his soul in peace. In 1984, a project team began work to deliver the requirements for the new college. His Late Majesty graciously gave his approval for the college to be named the “Command and Staff College, Sultan’s Armed Forces". On 30 September, 1987, the first course was inaugurated under the auspices of His Excellency Alssayid Mutasim bin Hamoud Al-Busaidi, the then Minister of State for Defence Affairs. The first CSC Course had 19 students drawn from the Royal Army of Oman, the Royal Air Force of Oman and the Royal Navy of Oman. On 11 December, 1988, His Late Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces – may Allah rest his soul in peace - officially opened the CSC building at Camp Bait Al Falaj. From the third cohort onwards, students from other branches of the military and security services were enrolled at the college. With effect from the seventh CSC Course in 1994, the Command and Staff College started to receive its first international students from the armies of a number of Gulf Cooperation Council countries. The 14th and 15th CSC Courses saw the participation of the first international students from friendly countries outside the GCC, when both courses received an officer from the United States. They were followed by a French army officer who joined the 16th CSC Course. Participation from friendly countries continued to rise, with as many as 19 countries sending students for the 33rd CSC Course, reflecting the prestigious reputation the college enjoys at regional and international levels, and serving as a testimony to the outstanding development of its academic programmes and the supporting educational resources.
